Apparently, Ian Stannard likes bad weather. Four years after his third place in an apocalyptic edition of Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, he beat Greg Van Avermaet in the sprint of the less raw, but soaking wet Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Saturday 1st of March, Ian Stannard took the victory in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. After an exciting race, the British rider from Team Sky won the sprint against Greg Van Avermaet. The Norwegian Boasson Hagen won the sprint for the third place against Sep Vanmarcke and Niki Terpstra. For the 26-old Stannard, it was the biggest victory in his career. Number one favourite Tom Boonen rode an anonymous race.
1st of March, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad will kick off the Belgian cycling season. Last year, Luca Paolini won in an exciting sprint against Stijn Vandenbergh.
