The 71st Omloop Het Nieuwsblad boasts a fantastic winner. Following a thrilling, nerve racking race, five racers managed to maintain a strong lead out of the pack’s reach. Greg van Avermaet led the sprint and was able to defeat world champion Peter Sagan and local hero Tiesj Benoot on pure brawn. The BMC racer will be succeeding Ian Stannard in the hall of fame.
While Tiesj Benoot was satisfied with his new step in the right direction, Peter Sagan was also reasonably pleased with his performance.
Greg Van Avermaet won the 71st edition of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad last Saturday, leaving Peter Sagan and his compatriot Tiesj Benoot far behind in the end spurt. ‘I managed to create a gap, and of course, I have certain skills’, he explained shortly after the race.
Team Giant-Alpecin will not participating in this year’s Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, held on February 27, 2016. At the end of January six riders of the German team were involved in an accident in Spain. John Degenkolb and five teammates were hurt, which has disorganized their spring season.
